DSD/Try Dive – Course Schedule

We meet at 08:00 am. After a short orientation, your instructor will give a short presentation on the basics of scuba diving equipment. Your Instructor will then go through some safe diving practices before briefing you for the short confined water session conducted in our swimming pool or (when conditions allow) the shallow part of the dive sites. The confined water session takes around 30 minutes. Your Instructor will introduce some basic scuba skills you will use for the open water dives. You will have an opportunity to master these skills in confined water before progressing to open water.

Your instructor will brief you, go through pre-dive safety checks then we’ll enter the water for practice and the underwater tour of the coral reef. We make shore entries so it’s a nice gradual decent and you’ll be feeling excited but quite comfortable during the tour as a result of your confined water session earlier.

You can expect to see lots of coral species (hard brain & pore corals, sea whips and gorgonian fans) and many tropical fish species such as jackfish-storm, turtles, bump-head parrot-fish, garden eels, butterfly fish, angelfish, pink anemone fish, moray eels, wrasses, stingrays and much more.

Following the dive we’ll return to the shore for a short rest, there are small local warungs available if you feel the need for some finger food, after this you’ll have the opportunity to make the second dive.

You are now a fully qualified Open Water Diver, certified to dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters with a buddy.

Our Open Water diver course schedule is flexible and we can adapt the itinerary to fit around your personal travel plans. Above is our standard Open Water courses schedule.

The Open Water Course, let’s take a closer look at each step in detail:

Orientation

We start the Open water diver course at 08:00 every day. To begin with your Instructor will conduct a course orientation. Starting with some introductions before informing you of the course schedule and asking you to complete some paperwork including the Medical Statement.

The Knowledge Development

This section of the Open Water diver course consists of a series of videos and chapters, Instructor led knowledge review sessions and multiple choice question quizzes. There are several modules in total. The final module finishes with a multiple choice exam.

The subjects covered include scuba equipment, safe dive practices, effects of pressure underwater, the buddy system and basic decompression theory. You will also learn about dive planning using Dive Planner and we will teach you how dive computers work. This will enable you to safely plan your dives, and keep to your dive profile during each dive.

Confined Water Training

All our confined water training sessions are conducted in one of our purpose built swimming pools. The very definition of confined water training means a swimming pool is without doubt the best place to conduct these sessions both from a safety and comfort perspective.

We’ll start in very shallow water gradually getting deeper (no more than three meters) as your confidence increases. Your instructor will demonstrate skills which you will practice back, designed to get you comfortable using scuba gear.

Scuba skills will include:

  • Equipment Assembly

  • Pre dive safety checks

  • Mask & regulator clearing

  • Alternative Air source Use

  • Buoyancy control

  • Communicating and underwater hand signals

  • Descents and Ascents

Special Attention! Don’t settle for anything less than the best. Some dive centers may tell you that it’s best to complete confined water in the ocean. On a perfect day, completing some aspects of confined water in a shallow bay can be fun and exciting but when you are breathing from scuba for the first time, naturally feeling a little apprehensive and nervous, and being asked to complete skills such as removing and replacing the mask or regulator underwater, the guaranteed calm and clear conditions a swimming pool offers is necessary. Shallow bays are not ideal if there is any wind, waves, poor visibility or other environmental conditions that will negatively affect the safety or comfort of either student or Instructor. And here around Tulamben and Amed area in Bali, shallow water of the sea get wavy quite often, the numerous interruptions are not conducive to teaching beginners scuba.

Our swimming pools are purpose built for scuba diving and offer you the best possible start on your way to becoming a Open Water diver. Don’t settle for anything less than the best.

Choose Quality. Choose Amed Fun Divers Bali.

Open Water Training Dives

Now time for the best bit! Your first Open water dives will allow you to put everything you have learnt over the previous day into practice.

On the morning of Day 2 you will complete Open Water training dives 1 & 2. With a maximum depth limit of 12 meters your instructor will guide you around the dive site as you become comfortable with your buoyancy, swimming underwater and the open water environment.

You will repeat a few of the skills you mastered the previous day in the swimming pool and of course, there will be time on both of your dives for an underwater tour, exploring the coral reefs and around the Area.

On the final morning of the course you will complete Open Water training dives 3 & 4, this time to a maximum depth of 18 meters. Expect to see lots of bright corals, colorful tropical fish, moray eels, sting rays and maybe even giant grouper, hawks-bill turtle and bump head parrot-fish.

Typical dive sites we visit during Open water training include Jemeluk coral garden, Jemeluk wall, pyramids, Tulamben Coral Garden, Drop off, worldwide known USAT liberty wreck.

During your final two dives our in-house underwater film team, Fundivers Images, will accompany you to capture your experience on film and then show at our after-dive area. The video is available to purchase after viewing so you can share your memories with family and friends.

Ready for your next Dive Adventure?

Course Schedule

The schedule for the Advanced Open Water course is flexible, and personalized depending on the elective dives you choose. Standards stipulate we can conduct 3 Adventure training dives in any one day. A typical schedule looks like this:

Day 1 – Orientation, Knowledge Development, Adventure Dives

We meet at 08:00 on Day 1. Your Instructor will conduct a short Orientation including completing some paperwork and a Medical Statement. This is the time we will discuss and choose the three elective dives you wish to make.

Unlike the Open Water course there is no exam. Instead each Adventure dive has a knowledge review. You will use the manual to complete the knowledge review before reviewing this with your Instructor. With some Adventure dives there are also some ‘land rehearsals’ prior to the dive.

After lunch you will go out on our dive car and complete two of your Adventure dives. The car departs around 13.30. Typically on the first day you will complete the Underwater Navigation dive which is mandatory. You will also complete a second Adventure such as Perfect Buoyancy, Fish ID, Search & Recovery or Underwater Naturalist.

The DPV Dive is the most popular elective dive in our Adventures in Diving Program. We schedule Night dives every second evening and assuming you choose this elective we will meet at 17:30.

We time our trip to the dive site to coincide with the sunset, ideally aiming to be in the water just before the sun completely goes down. This way the first few minutes of the dive, whilst you are becoming comfortable are a little easier as we are not in total darkness. Night diving is an amazing experience. You will see some species of marine life you have seen during the day light hours actually sleeping including the Titan Triggerfish. Other species such as hermit crabs and nocturnal stingrays are out foraging in the sand for food, Cuttle fish glow in your torch light and moving your arm slowly will reveal fluorescent phosphorescent plankton glowing in the darkness. You may also see Barracuda hunting for small fish and if you’re lucky you may even see them catch their prey in the light of your torch.

Day 2 – Advanced Course – Adventure Dives and Certification

Up bright and early, our dive car departs at 08.00 for the highlight of the Advanced Open Water course, the Deep Adventure Dive and the first opportunity for you to experience Nitrogen Narcosis!

We will visit one of the deeper laying dive sites  such as Tulamben Drop off, Amed wall or Kubu reef, the best ‘advanced’ dive sites around. You will descend to a maximum depth of 30 meters and your Instructor will demonstrate the effects of pressure and how it affects us at depth.

You will also get to see a greater diversity of marine life than at some of the shallower dive sites. Some of Bali’s larger marine species such as Giant Barracuda, King Mackerel, Giant Grouper and sharks typically hang out at deeper sites.

You will then complete a second Adventure dive of the day. This is your final elective dive and amongst the more popular choices of dives are; Wreck, DPV.

08:00 – Afternoon: Open water training & Rescue scenarios

Orientation

We start the Rescue Diver course at 08:00 am every day. To begin with your Instructor will conduct a course orientation. Starting with some introductions before informing you of the course schedule and asking you to complete some paperwork including the Medical Statement.

The knowledge development portion of the Rescue Diver course consists of several modules. You will start by watching the Rescue diver video or reading the manual, before completing knowledge reviews as part of Instructor led Knowledge development sessions.

You will be required to complete an Emergency Assistance Plan and the multiple choice Rescue diver exam. Knowledge development sessions are scheduled during the 2 sessions of two days and the EAP & Final exam is completed during the afternoon session of day 3.

Confined Water Training

The philosophy for the revamped Rescue Diver course was to introduce new skills first in confined water, ideally in a swimming pool. Fun Divers Bali implemented this important philosophy as we realized the importance of students mastering these skills first before attempting to use them in an open water environment.

We conduct a Confined water Rescue diver skills session in our purpose built training pool during the afternoon session on Day 1 of the Rescue Diver course.

We start with a ‘Self Rescue review’ focusing on stress situations a diver may experience and how they can help themselves. We then introduce the following exercises, initially via an Instructor led demonstration before allowing student practice time.

  • Tired diver

  • Panicked Diver

  • Response from shore to a responsive but stressed diver

  • Distressed Diver underwater

  • Surfacing an unresponsive diver

  • Dealing with an unconscious diver on the surface

  • In water rescue breathing techniques

  • Exiting an unresponsive diver from pool and shore

  • Response from shore to unresponsive diver

Special Attention!

Don’t settle for anything less than the best. Some dive centers may tell you that it’s best to complete confined water in the ocean. On a perfect day completing some aspects of confined water in a shallow bay can be fun and exciting, but when you are practicing and being expected to ‘master’ Rescue skills such as ‘administrating rescue breaths to an unresponsive diver at the surface whilst towing that diver’ the guaranteed calm, clear conditions a swimming pool offers is necessary both for the initial introduction and further practice required to meet the standard expected of a Rescue diver.

Shallow bays are not ideal if there is any wind, waves, poor visibility or other environmental conditions that will negatively affect the conditions whilst these skills are being mastered.

We initially introduce skills basic to complex, before putting those skills together. Once a Rescue diver student has mastered these complex skills we can then add more variations such as open water environment.

Our swimming pool is purpose built for scuba diving and offer you the best possible opportunity on your way to becoming a Rescue diver.

Don’t settle for anything less than the best. Choose QUALITY. Choose FUN DIVERS BALI.

Open Water Training

The morning sessions on Day 2 & 3 of the Rescue Diver course are scheduled out on the open water dives. You will be asked to repeat the skills mastered in confined water the previous afternoon. We will also introduce some additional skills during Day 2. They include:

  • Underwater search patterns using a compass

  • Missing diver procedures

  • Response from shore to a responsive but distressed diver

  • Exiting an unresponsive diver from ocean onto beach

  • First Aid for Pressure related injuries and Oxygen Administration

  • Response from the shore to unresponsive diver on the surface

  • In water rescue breathing techniques

  • Exiting an unresponsive diver from pool and shore

Rescue Scenarios

Once all Rescue exercises and performance requirements have been met the final test before being certified as a Rescue Diver is to the Rescue Scenarios. These are conducted off our shore dive sites, and are set up to be as realistic as possible. All the training of the previous 3 days is put together.

Scenario 1 – Unresponsive Diver Underwater

Search for and locate a missing diver during an accident simulation bringing a diver simulating unresponsiveness to the surface using controlled positive buoyancy.

Scenario 2 – Unresponsive Diver at the Surface

Effectively respond to an unresponsive, non breathing diver during an accident simulation. Includes in water rescue breathing, removing equipment, exiting and providing CPR.

Sidemount Diver

The Sidemount Diver Course teaches you how to configure and use one or two cylinders mounted at your sides instead of on your back.

Maximize your streamline in the water, reduce lower back strain and take advantage of the increased gas supply for longer dives.

Sidemount diving is configuring the diver’s cylinders under the diver’s arms, instead of on the back.

This configuration was designed for cave diving and single cylinders because they are easier to haul in situations when divers must carry dive gear through rough terrain to the water’s edge.

Sidemount diving can be used in a variety of different environments and offers excellent advantages for divers with limited mobility who prefer sidemount over wearing back mounted cylinders.

Benefits

  • Adjustability – Enhance your streamlining and body position while better controlling environmental contact.

  • Access – Easy access to the regulator first stage(s) and tank valve(s) which are positioned in front of you instead of behind you.

  • Back Relief – By mounting cylinder(s) on their sides.

  • Maximize Time – A comfortable option to increase air supply and maximise bottom time; especially when using enriched air.

  • Redundant Gas Supply & Delivery System – Handle a low or out-of-gas problem by switching to the second cylinder; handle a regulator failure by switching to the second regulator.

Our Sidemount Diver package includes:

  • Sidemount diver course.

  • Rental of all Sidemount equipment.
